Nuclear Reactor Operations

A nuclear reactor initiates a controlled fission process in heavy elements like Uranium (U235) or Thorium (Th232). As nuclei split, they release immense heat energy and neutrons, driving a chain reaction. The heat generated is transferred to a coolant—water, gas, or liquid metal—which circulates through the system.

To ensure safety, reactors are enclosed in protective shielding, and the chain reaction is carefully regulated to prevent uncontrolled escalation.

Types of Reactors:

  • Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR):
    Uses high-pressure water as a coolant and moderator. The heated water transfers energy through a heat exchanger to a secondary loop, preventing radioactive contamination.

  • Boiling Water Reactor (BWR):
    Generates steam directly within the reactor. Though efficient, this design involves direct contact between coolant water, fuel rods, and turbine, increasing radioactive exposure risks.

Heat Exchanger

The heat exchanger enables the primary coolant to transfer heat to a secondary water loop without direct contact. This process converts secondary loop water into steam for turbine operation while keeping the secondary system free from radioactive materials.

Steam Turbine & Alternator

High-pressure steam drives the steam turbine, causing it to rotate and expand the steam volume as pressure drops. The turbine is mechanically coupled to an alternator, converting mechanical energy into electrical energy.

The electrical output is stepped up using transformers to support long-distance transmission efficiently.

Condenser

After passing through the turbine, the used steam enters a condenser where it is cooled and condensed back into water. This is achieved via a third cold water loop, enabling the recycled water to re-enter the system for reheating.
