Vortex Flow Meters Manufacturer in Ahmedabad
As a premier Vortex Flow Meter Manufacturer and Supplier in Ahmedabad, Aranka Instruments LLP provides cutting-edge flow measurement solutions for gases, steam, and liquids. Our vortex flow meters operate on the von Kármán (Karman) vortex principle, wherein a bluff body (obstruction) placed in the fluid flow causes a repeating pattern of swirling vortices on its downstream side. By measuring the frequency at which these vortices shed, the meter calculates fluid velocity, and from that the volumetric or mass flow rate. The sensor identifies vortex shedding in both upstream and downstream vortex rows, and its built-in electronics convert this frequency signal into flow, velocity, density, and mass flow outputs. With features such as in-built RTD, pressure sensing, self-diagnostics, and high stability, our vortex meters offer reliable performance, low maintenance, and excellent accuracy across demanding industrial applications.
The vortex flowmeter uses the principle of fluid oscillation to measure flow. When the fluid passes through the vortex flow transmitter in the pipeline, two rows of vortices proportional to the flow velocity are alternately generated up and down after the vortex generator of the triangular column. The release frequency of the vortex is proportional to the flow rate. The average velocity of the fluid flowing through the vortex generator is related to the characteristic width of the vortex generator, and can be expressed by the following formula:
where: f is the release frequency of the vortex, unit in Hz; v is the average velocity of the fluid flowing through the vortex generator, unit in m/s, d is the characteristic width of the vortex generator, the unit is m; St is the Strouhal number, dimensionless, and its numerical range is 0.14-0.27.
St is a function of Reynolds number
When the Reynolds number Re is within the range, the value of St is about 0.2. In the measurement, try to satisfy the Reynolds number of the fluid at
and the vortex frequency at this time is
Thus, by measuring the frequency of the vortex, the average velocity “v “of the fluid flowing through the vortex generator can be calculated, q=vA, and then the flow rate “q” can be calculated from the formula, where “A “is the cross-sectional area of the fluid flowing through the vortex generator

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a Vortex Flow Meter?
A vortex flow meter is a device that measures fluid flow velocity by detecting the flow-induced alternating vortices (swirls) generated behind a bluff body in the flow path.
How does a Vortex Flow Meter work?
When fluid flows past the bluff body (vortex generator), vortices are alternately shed on either side. The shedding frequency is directly proportional to fluid velocity. The meter’s electronics sense this frequency and compute the flow rate.
What is the von Kármán effect/principle?
The von Kármán effect describes how alternating vortices form when fluid flows past a bluff body. The regular shedding of these vortices is used to derive flow information.
Can it measure in both forward and reverse flow?
Some vortex meters can detect bidirectional flow, depending on design.
What types of media can a Vortex Flow Meter handle?
It is suitable for liquids, gases, and steam. It can measure volumetric flow under normal conditions or convert to mass flow using built-in sensors.
What is the accuracy offered?
For liquids, accuracy is typically ±1.0% of reading; for gases and steam, ±1.5% of reading.
What maintenance is required?
Minimal maintenance — ensure sensor and bluff body surfaces remain free of heavy deposits or fouling, and periodic calibration checks.
What industries use vortex flow meters?
They are used in power plants, steam systems, HVAC, chemical process, gas pipelines, and industrial applications requiring fluid flow monitoring.
